MAKING THE MOST OF INDIA
D - CAMEL SAFARI
There is no better vantage point to
appreciate the wilderness desert areas of Rajasthan than the saddle of a camel.
Surrounded by endless sandy wastes, these apparently ungainly come into their
element, allowing you an authentic and intimate glimpse of villages and ways of
life virtually unchanged for centuries. Your own creature comforts however
should not be forgotten, so do bring a sun hat and a cushion (the swaying 'ride'
of the camels can have unforeseen effects!) You will have you own camel and
attendant/driver. Luggage will be accommodated in camel carts. The best center
for camel safaris is Jaisalmer, easily accessible from Delhi or Bombay.
Day 1 Arrive Jodhpur from Bombay or Delhi. Upon arrival, you
will be transferred to hotel. Overnight at the hotel. Over 500 years old,
Jodhpur was the headquarters of the Rathore Rajputs, renowned for their daring.
Visit the impressive Mehrangarh Fort and the palaces. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 2 Leave for Jaisalmer and visit Pokharan. Relax in the heart of
the Thar Desert, home of the Bhati Rajputs. Overnight at the hotel.
Day
3 Leave Jaisalmer after breakfast by road, visiting the oasis of Bada Bagh,
lunching at Ramkunda, and continuing past Rajput and tribal villages, some
occupied, others abandoned, to Luderva for dinner and overnight tented
accommodation.
Day 4
After breakfast leave for Kuldhera, visiting the village of Kala en route, for
lunching nearby, and reaching Kuldhera for supper and overnight in tents.
Day 5 Leave for Moolsagar, a garden set around a small tank or lake
where lunch will be taken (and the camels left) and so on in the afternoon to
Jaisalmer by jeep. Overnight in hotel in Jaisalmer.
Day 6 Leave
Jaisalmer for Jodhpur and then onwards to your next destination.
E - GOA THE GOLDEN
'Goa Dourada' as the 17th century
Portuguese called it when the old capital was the envy of Europe, Golden it
still is, with a 65 mile long coastline of fine beaches, a culture that is an
enchanting fusion of Indian and Portuguese traditions, and a mouthwatering local
cuisine. Goa has drawn travelers for centuries, initially merchant venturers
seeking spices but now lotus-eaters intent on relaxing and enjoying themselves.
Flights operate to Goa with great frequency from all over India so not only is
Goa remarkably accessible but there is little need to trim the length of your
stay to an airline's timetable.
Day 1 Depart from Bombay for
your flight to Goa and transfer to the hotel.
Day 2-3 At leisure in
Goa.
Day 4 After an early lunch transfer to the airport for your
flight to Bombay.
This tour is for 3 nights and four days and does not
include any sightseeing. Additional night rates are available.
F - HIDDEN TREASURES OF AJANTA & ELLORA
Nearly two centuries
ago a party of British officers from Madras, hunting tiger near Ajanta,
discovered a chain of caves obscured by bushes in a crescent-shaped gorge above
the river Waghora. Within these manmade caves, which functioned as the halls,
chapels and verandas of monasteries were endless murals, frescoes and
sculptures, retelling the life story of the Buddha and displaying the culture,
traditions and daily life of the people of the times. Rivaling anything produced
by the Italian Renaissance, these works of art, created 200BC-650AD, had lain
dormant for 1000 years, and are now recognized as the greatest of all India cave
paintings. Two hour's drive away lie the extraordinary Hindu, Jain and Buddhist
temples at Ellora, scooped from basalt into monasteries, chapels, courtyards,
sanctuaries, halls, temples and pilgrim's hostels. The Kailasthanatha is the
most spectacular, carved from a single rock the size of the Parthenon; work
began at the top and the sculptors chiseled down, a breathtaking feat. Your base
will be Aurangabad (a short drive away) with decorated rock-cut caves of its own
dating back 2000 years. This option is best suited to clients beginning or
ending their tour in Bombay (but is easily accessible from Delhi, Jaipur and
Udaipur).
Day 1-3 The early morning flight from Bombay arrives
at Aurangabad in time for a late breakfast at your hotel leaving the rest of the
day to visit the Ellora Caves. The next day is spent at Ajanta, and on the
morning of the third and final day you board the morning flight back to Bombay.
G - GLORIOUS DELHI & AGRA
For many, the renowned and
popular cities Delhi and Agra, epitomize in a way no other area can match, a
lyrical vision of romantic India. This tour concentrates into a very short space
of time - some of the great delights and unmissable sights of Moghul India.
Day 1 Morning pickup from your hotel for a full day of Old and
New Delhi.
Day 2 Depart by train to Agra and spend a wonderful day
visiting the eternal Taj Mahal, the exquisite Agra Fort and the abandoned city
of Fatehpur Sikri. Return to Delhi in the late evening.
H - LINGER AT COVELONG
A short drive down the coast road from
Madras brings you to one of the finest stretches of beach in all South India and
to the Taj Group's Fisherman's Cove beach resort. Built on the site of an
ancient fort, surrounded by glorious gardens, accommodation is either in the
main building or in separate cottages in the grounds. The resort has everything
you'd expect of luxury first-class beach hotel, and is an excellent center for
exploring the 7th century shore temple and sculptures at Mahabalipuram just down
the coast and the sacred city of Kanchipuram a short way inland. Both these
destinations can be comfortably fitted into one day.
Day 1 The
short drive from Madras easily brings you to Covering in time to settle in and
relax over lunch. The afternoon is free.
Day 2-3 Full day excursion
to Kanchipuram and Mahabalipuram. Spend the following day relaxing on the beach.
Day 4 After a day spent on the beach, you will depart in the early
evening for the drive back to Madras.
